George's Street, Limerick

Via Flickr:
Hope you don't mind, but think I'll recycle one or two photos that have been hiding away in the bowels of our stream since we started on Flickr and before we hit the Commons, as they're pretty good but haven't really had much attention. They were part of the Munsterset project, but were quite low res. I'm replacing with higher quality images and I hope you'll like them.

This is George's Street, Limerick descending into the distance from no. 26 on the right - MacMahon's Temperance Hotel and Restaurant. On the left side of the street, the numbers are rising from 120 - O'Mahony & Co.

Date: 1900??

Mathew Bridge, Limerick

Mathew Bridge, which spans the Abbey River, was opened in 1846, replacing the three-arched New Bridge, built 1762. Designed by W. H. Owens, the bridge commemorates Fr.Mathew, founder of the great 19th century national temperance movement. Up to 180,000 from Limerick city and county were reputed to have taken the pledge from him. In the background is St. Mary's Cathedral, traditionally said to have been built by Donal Mor O'Brien, King of Munster, on the site of his palace in 1192. (D. O'Shaughnessy).

LIMERICK’s first dedicated area for so-called street art with 100 metres of timber hoarding at the junction of Athlunkard Street and Island Road officially unveiled by the local authority as an “authorised area” for such activity.

Additionally an article on this local initiative in the local newspaper: http://www.limerickleader.ie/lifestyle/entertainment/official-street-art-area-is-unveiled-in-limerick-1-4447820
